Leeds United 0 Hereford United 1
HEREFORD added another chapter to their glorious giantkilling history with a memorable win at Elland Road.
And the result was no fluke with the Bulls at least matching their illustrious opponents in every facet of play.
As Leeds boss Dennis Wise put it: "Credit to Hereford, they passed it better than us and deserve to go through."
Hereford took a shock lead from virtually their first attack of the game in the third minute.
Theo Robinson worked the ball to Lionel Ainsworth on the edge of the area and the winger, his confidence high after a hat-trick last Saturday at Stockport, drilled a low drive into the corner of the net with his right foot.
With Hereford flying, Robinson sent Ainsworth clear again on the right but no-one was able to get on the end of the winger's cross.
And then Richard Rose's pass out of defence sent Robinson clear only for goalkeeper Casper Ankergren to race out and block.
Hereford had an escape in the 11th minute when Tresor Kandol's header was well blocked by Wayne Brown before the Hereford defence hacked the ball clear.
Rose was injured in the melee and had to leave the field temporarily to have a head wound treated.
While he was off the field, Leeds pressed forward in numbers but the Hereford defence worked overtime to repel all of their raids.
United's speed on the break continued to cause problems and Robinson might have done better when Rose set him clear again.
The young striker chose to shoot when other players were better placed.
Robinson missed another great chance on 33 minutes when fine work by Ben Smith and Trevor Benjamin set him in the clear.
Once again keeper Ankergren dealt well with the danger but Robinson should really have scored.
Leeds suffered a blow, however, with Ankergren hurting himself in making the stop and having to leave the field to be replaced by David Lucas.
Leeds piled on the pressure at the start of the second period without seriously troubling Brown.
And Ainsworth came close to extending the Hereford lead with a 20-yarder which fizzed a foot wide.
Hereford then went on to have the better of the chances with Robinson's pace always a threat in attack.
Leeds sent on a third attacker, Leon Constantine, but although they continued to huff and puff but simply could not break down the solid Bulls defence.
Their best effort came from the always-dangerous Jermaine Beckford who forced a fine low save from Brown midway through the half.
