Luctonians score two tries in last eight minutes for National Two North win in Hull

TWO tries in the last eight minutes earned Luctonians their third straight bonus point win and keeps them joint top of National Two North.

A strong and physical Hull side took the lead when fly-half Greg Lounds kicked an easy penalty.

Luctonians opened their account after 18 minutes when hooker Nick Byron won a scrum against the head, allowing winger Drew Cheshire to walk through three tackles to score a try which was converted by stand-in kicker Dan Smith.

But full-back Jim Wrigglesworth kicked a second Hull penalty and then home scrum-half Dan White raced in under the posts, giving Lounds an easy conversion.

Minutes later, winger Alex Piercy intercepted a pass and raced the length of the field unopposed to score under the posts. Lounds’ conversion gave the home side a 20-7 half-time lead.

Some poor kicking prevented Lucs from taking advantage of having the wind at their backs at the start of the season period but, finally, a break by fly-half Andy Williams took play deep into the Hull 22 where White was yellow carded. From the resultant penalty, lock Alex Davidson claimed the try which Smith converted.

Byron and Hull’s No 8 Ollie Cook were yellow-carded in quick succession before, on the hour, Lounds kicked a third penalty for a 23-14 lead.

Luctonians’ replacements gave them a new lease of life and Davidson put Smith in space to squeeze over in the corner for an unconverted try.

With two minutes remaining, Hull were penalised near half-way and, following dissent, were marched back 10 metres. From a quickly-taken penalty Lucs and a slick three quarter movement, replacement Charlie Meredith broke through to touch down with Smith’s conversion giving Lucs a three-point lead which they held to gain their first ever victory at Ferrens Ground.

On Saturday, the Mortimer Park club face another tough challenge when they make the journey to Merseyside to take on Caldy.

Trinity Guild 23 pts Greyhound 25.

A LAST-minute penalty from Dave Bromage earned Greyhound the points on their return to Midlands Five West (South).

The Coventry-based hosts led for most of the game but four tries, shared between Elliott Phillips, Mike Weaver and Rob Chance, as well as a conversion from Bromage helped the city side to a bonus-point win.
