Millfield 22 pts Bishop of Hereford’s Bluecoat School 17.
BISHOP’S were unfortunate to come away losers from a thrilling fixture producing plenty of high quality rugby.
An early penalty gave the Somerset school the advantage but Bishop’s responded when Stefan Olszanski kicked ahead and pressurised the home full-back into a mistake which allowed Will Teece to go over in the corner. Olszanski added the extra points.
Millfield went on to the attack and drove towards the Bishop’s line but the visiting forwards turned the ball over and flanker Noah Callaghan sprinted 80 yards to score in the corner and extend the lead to 12-3.
A missed tackle enabled Millfield to score a converted try just before the interval and it was a similar story early in the second period when another missed tackle brought a second home try, this time unconverted.
Despite another converted Millfield try, Bishop’s were never out of the game and Adam Turner’s dummy allowed Teece in for his second try of the afternoon which cut the final deficit to just five points.
“It was a game which could have gone either way and there was some rugby of outstanding quality,” said Bishop’s coach John Escott.
“It was the best under-16 game I’ve seen in three years.”
BISHOP of Hereford’s Bluecoat School’s coach John Escott (above left) was reminded of a previous Millfield connection with the appointment of Chris Robshaw as England captain this week.
“Robshaw was captain of the Millfield side which won the Herefordshire Schools international sevens tournament, which I organised, the last time it was held in March 2004,” recalled the former Bishop’s head of sport.
