LUCTONIANS were handed a relegation life-line after a last minute try from replacement Jordan Street gave them a 24-23 victory over fellow strugglers Preston Grasshoppers.

Lucs had looked doomed in the relegation 'eight pointer' when 17-0 behind at half-time only for a remarkable fight-back.

Director of rugby Alex Davidson said he always knew his team would pull through the test.

He said: "It was a much needed win as Preston's win last week over Leicester Lions was unexpected and made us panic slightly.

"It was a game of two halves and they defended well with their pack dominating the first half but it was clear they were going to tire.

"We had the wind on our backs and turned it around after half-time.

"We had players on the bench coming back from injury who came on and had a great impact and we eventually got the fourth try."

Grasshoppers started strongly with Tom Hurst opening the scoring on 15 minutes. The hosts added another on the stroke of half-time when the Luctonians' pack were penalised for persistently collapsing the scrum and a penalty try awarded to put them 17-0 ahead.

Adam Knight responded running over in the corner for the visitor's first points of the game after the break.

When Stefan Psota crossed for Luctonians' second try the visitors started to believe a remarkable comeback was possible.

It was almost complete when Joseph White went over from a driving maul and a John Morris conversion brought his side back to 20-19.

With eight minutes remaining Grasshopper's kicker Lewis Allen opted to kick a penalty hoping it would be enough for victory.

But in the dying seconds Lucs clinched the win with Street being pushed over the line.

"I think we called the game an eight point," added Davidson.

"We have some winnable games coming up and going forward we need two more wins.

"Three wins would be terrific and would put us in mid-table."
