LUCTONIANS captain Alex Smith says there’s no reason why his side cannot upset runaway National League 2 North leaders Caldy this weekend.

Smith’s troops gained a vital win against fifth-placed Sedgley Park the last time they were at Mortimer Park and gained a valuable losing bonus point at Chester last Saturday.

“They have been outstanding this season, but we always fancy ourselves against anyone, especially at home,” said Smith.

“Outsiders looking in won’t expect us to get too much out of the game, but they could also have said that before the Sedgley Park game.

“Our supporters are always loud at home and tend to get up for the big games.

"We’re confident of giving a good account of ourselves.”

Smith said that lapses in concentration saw Chester beat his side.

“It’s a little bit disappointing because because we played some good rugby,” said Smith.

“But you cannot have slip-ups against good sides like Chester.

“I don’t think too many sides will go there and win because they’re a well organised side.

“But we still got a point to put on our league total.”

Robert Fitzerald scored Chester’s first try after six minutes when he raced down the corner after 18 phases of play.

Two penalties from full-back Johnny Morris then put Luctonians in front before winger Charlie Grimes races away from the Chester to score in the 29th minute.

But Chester hit back with a try from hooker Alick Croft before prop Colin Campbell finished off a Callum Bennett break just before half-time.

That try was converted by Bennett to take Chester into the break 17-11 ahead.

Lucs went back in front when Morris converted replacement Dale Garner’s try, but that would be the last time the Kingsland side would be ahead.

Captain David Ford restored Chester’s advantage 10 minutes later with a try from a driving maul before Andrew Baston finished off a move following multiple phases.

Frank Kelly grabbed a late try for Luctonians, but they could not force another score and had to settle for a losing bonus point.
