HEREFORD Rugby Club captain Luke Yarranton says there's no reason why his side cannot push towards the top end of the Midlands 1 West table following a much-needed win over Dudley Kingswinford.

The Wyesiders secured an excellent 34-13 bonus point win thanks to five tries.

"At the start of the season, we genuinely thought we were going to top two in the league," admitted Yarranton.

"After a disappointing start, we set our sights slightly lower, but after results like that there's no reason why we can't push on and get to the top of the league and look for promotion.

"We knew Newport were going to be strong after coming from the league above, but two years ago when they came down, we gave them a good game here and we find we always step up against the big teams.

"Player for player, I think we can match anyone, we've just got to gel it together."

Yarranton added that it was a must-win game.

"It was a case of getting a result after a disappointing draw against Crewe," he said.

"Throughout the week, we had building up for a win and we fancied our chances.

"We know they don't travel well and it was a game that, at the start of the season, we put a win against.

"We know we had the ability to score lots of tries, we've got the individual talent, it's just a case of bringing it together and I think we did and got some good tries."

Hereford coach Bob Stewart was delighted with the win.

"The boys worked hard in training did everything that we asked," said Stewart.

"We had been working on our discipline, especially from the start, and our lack of penalty count was very good.

"We controlled the game well and they reaped the rewards.

"The strength of depth we've got with the youngsters coming through is great.

"David Gray, who has been playing for the seconds, came up 10 minutes before kick off and came off the bench with 25 minutes left and didn't miss a tackle.

"They're not getting fazed at all, they know the structure and I'm delighted for the boys.

"We've got a good strong colts system and we try and get them in the first team.

"They're certainly get second team rugby, but I think it's important if they can play in the first team.

"It shows if they play at a higher level and inspire the rest of the colts.

"We had Ollie Hutchinson, David Gray , Callum Duncan and it's fantastic how it's coming through."

Dudley Kingswinford opened the scoring with an early penalty from Duncan Tompkins before Tom Ewins scored the first of his two tries.

Nathan Boden then charged over for a second try just after the 20 minute mark.

Tomkins kicked over a drop goal to reduce the deficit, but Hereford extended their lead through Leon Parsons; Morgan Goodall converting.

Parsons scored again at the start of the second half; Goodall again converting, before a converted Ewins try made it 31-6.

Dudley eventually scored a try from Stefan Shillingford, which Tompkins converted, but they never looked like coming back in the game.

A Goodall penalty was the last score.

This Saturday, Hereford make the short trip to Worcester.

"It's a local derby and we need to really turn it on up there," said Hereford full-back Sean Day.

"They're in a similar position to us, they've had a couple of wins but haven't really performed to the standard they did last year.

"It's a very tough league and last year we started slowly.

"There are some better teams in the league this year and it gets tougher year on year.

"But now we're starting to pick up points and if we can pick up a few more wins, we should be at least top half, if not pushing for promotion."
