LUCTONIANS director of rugby Alex Davidson believes early sin bins cost his side dear as they went down to a heavy 76-35 defeat to Sedgley Park in National League Two North.

Winger Will Hodnett and prop Joe White were both yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on and a high tackle respectively, allowing the hosts to take the game away from Davidson's side.

"We started quite brightly but I think the two sin bins killed it," said Davidson.

"They scored three tries and then got a fourth, which was effectively game over.

"But at least we pleated and got a bonus point, which we wouldn't have had if say we lost 29-21.

"Not many teams will go to Sedgley Park and get a point.

"It was away from home and we were a bit disrupted going into the game having lost Stefan Psota to a broken arm.

"Dan Smith also failed a concussion test in midweek, so that was another forward we were missing.

"But we will regroup and go again."

Sedgley Park opened the scoring thanks to a Jonathan Matthews try following a driving maul before number eight Juan Crous went over.

A run from inside his own half from fly-half Steve Collins then led to Jamie Harrison scoring another try.

Collins converted all three tries to take Sedgley Park into a 21-0 lead.

Charlie Grimes finally got Lucs on the scoresheet with a try, converted by Louis Silver, but the hosts hit back through Shaun Needham.

Lucs remained in the game when Silver converted Joe Doyle's try to reduce the deficit to 26-14.

But any hope of a Luctonians resurgence was shortlived as Sedgley Park ran in two quick-fire tries from Matthews and Alex Powell to take them into the half-time break 40-14 ahead. The Tigers forged further ahead after the restart with tries from Matthews and Sam, Lowthon before Lucs had their best spell of the game.

Three tries in ten minutes from Grimes, Matthew Hackley and Jorn Schroeder, countered by one Sedgley score from Callum McShane, gave the Kingsland side a bonus point.

But the hosts reasserted their authority with more scores from Matthews and Rob Holloway.

This Saturday, Luctonians host Chester at Mortimer Park.

"They appeared to have had a good win at the weekend, but we always perform well against them," added Davidson.
