GREYHOUND Ladies coach Chris Hales has targeted winning National Challenge Midlands Two (South) this season.

The Hereford based side have reformed after folding 10 years ago and beat Banbury Belles 37-5 on Sunday in their opening home game.

"I have said to the girls this year that the league is there for them," said Hales.

"We've supplied girls for numerous years for Newent, who got promotion last year.

"I want to take the league this year.

"It's a very strong, mobile pack and it's an exceptional back line with some real leaders.

"You look at the dynamic of this team and how it's made up – you've got ladies coming over from Greyhound's touch team, Luctonians' touch team, who wanted to try their hand at contact, we even had a girl come over from Malvern.

"It's starting to develop all the time."

Luctonians and Ross both have Ladies teams, but Greyhound are the only side that play contact rugby.

Captain Carly Phillips said the team now has 29 registered players.

"We were in a league 10 years ago, but folded due to lack of numbers," explained Phillips, whose side are sponsored by Mamma Jammas.

"In 2010, I decided that I wanted to get it back up.

"Three or four of us were playing touch and we started recruiting within touch rugby.

"Last season, we played some friendlies and didn't lose any of them.

"With the Olympics and the Rugby World Cup, a lot of people are now more aware of women's rugby."
