THE third annual Jack Segust memorial 7s has taken place at Ledbury Rugby Club.

Known as “The Seabass 7s” the event, sponsored by Fruitful Jobs and Renault in Cheltenham, was set up to mark the passing of Jack Segust four years ago.

It has continued to establish itself as a popular event in the rugby calendar, marking its third year of running by raising money for Midlands Air Ambulance.

Along with hosting both competitive and social rugby, the event worked alongside a Beer Festival hosted by CBR E-cask who were raising money for the Kidney Association.

This year's tournament was competed in two sections, cup and social.

The social teams brought together both current and retired players playing in three teams from Ledbury, alongside Bromyard, Hereford and Widden Old Boys.

The final was contested between Hereford Veterans and Widden Old Boys, with the latter winning from the final play of the game.

The cup was made up of eight teams split into two groups of four.

There was an added incentive to the competing sides with the RFU 24/Sevens Series qualifier for the regional finals up for grabs.

The eight teams comprised of Ledbury's first and Colts sides, 2015 winners Honey Badgers, Hereford, Pilgrims, Church Stretton, South Wales Rabbitos and 7s team Cunning Stunts.

With excellent rugby on the show, the competitive tournament produced some high levels of skill and expertise.

An all Ledbury clash between the firsts and Colts was a highlight of the day, with the Colts' extra greater fitness aiding them to a victory.

The victory would help with their seeding for the knockout stages of the tournament, with the side finding their way through to the final against the side from across the border, South Wales Rabbitos.

The final was a great spectacle from the start, but the pace of the game was a bit too much for the Colts whose young, talented side soon ran out of steam.

South Wales pulled away and won comfortably, but both sides qualified for the regionals.
