LUCTONIANS could be compensated after their game at Tynedale was called off due to floods.

The Kingsland side were just 20 minutes away from Tynedale Park in Corbridge when the match was postponed at 11.45am last Saturday.

Lucs started off their mammoth journey at 3pm the previous day and had an overnight stop in Carlisle before heading across the A69 the next morning to Corbridge.

In total, Luctonians spent about £2,500 in travel and accommodation costs.

"The RFC have a fund for insurance for such cases and we are putting a document together," said Luctonians director of rugby Alex Davidson.

"It cost the club about £2,500 for the weekend and we have to wait until the end of the season to see if we get a handout."

Davidson said the pitch was playable on Saturday morning, but was soon under water after the flood defences were breached.

"We were called at 11.45am when we were between Carlisle and Corbridge to say the game was off," said Davidson.

"But, we were already in a three-mile tailback because it was flooding in the road.

"We were told the pitch was three-foot under water because the river had burst its banks.

"In hindsight, maybe someone should have called on the Friday, but we left at 3pm and there was no indication it would burst its banks.

"Our chairman, Simon Whiteman, was up there on Saturday morning because he stayed in Colbridge and at 8.30am, it was still fine.

"Fourteen hours out of 24 sat on a bus isn't great, but obviously our thoughts are with those in the north who have been affected by the floods.

"The rugby ground got water inside and it'll take them a while to get a game back on there."

Luctonians have slipped back to the bottom of National League 2 North due to Broadstreet winning, but are just five points from safety.

They are next in action this Saturday when they host sixth-placed Otley.

"I saw video footage of their game against South Leicester and their scrummage always used to be very dominant, but that was not the case this time," said Davidson.

"No one obviously picked up any injuries on Saturday due to not playing, so I think everyone is available.

"Brad Talbot, who picked up a shoulder injury at Caldy, is back and will put pressure on our back row."

Lucs have won their last two games and Davidson is hopeful his side can start getting themselves out of trouble.

"The bubble seems to have burst at Sale, so we need to bring them and South Leicester back into it," said Davidson.

"If we get a couple of wins and get something out of Stourbridge, who are rocking and rolling at the moment, then that will do us nicely."

Prop James Page has recently joined Lucs as part of the deal Davidson's side have with Worcester Warriors.

"He went to Malvern College and has come back from the USA," said Davidson.

"He is a really strong, young player, but is quite raw because he is only used to playing aged-grade rugby.

"But he is looking forward to stepping up and brings a bit of freshness to the squad."

Davidson added that he is now pleased with the squad he has available.

"We are still looking for a ball carrier, but John Kelly is now back and is firing and Seb Freydell has returned from his sabbatical in Austria," said Davidson.
