A FORMER Hereford Rugby Club player has signed a new long-term contract with Aviva Premiership side Wasps.

Guy Thompson, who played for the Wyesiders in National Three Midlands in 2010, said he is delighted with the new deal.

"I just think with the way things are going at the club and with the move to Coventry being massively successful so far, it's an exciting time to be here.," said Thompson.

"I do believe, with the way things are progressing, we will have the ability to really start competing at the top end of the table and be challenging for the title in the next few years. "So to be offered an extension at the club was brilliant and I love being part of this squad."

Thompson, who went to the Bishop of Hereford's Bluecoat School, joined Wasps two years ago after impressing at Jersey.

The 28-year-old made a significant impact in his first year at Wasps, scoring nine tries in 25 appearances,

He was also nominated for 'try of the season' for his effort against Leicester Tigers at Welford Road and was named man of the match in Wasps' European 7th place play-off win against Stade Francais in Paris.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young said he is pleased Thompson has committed himself to the club.

"Guy has not only proved that he's a Premiership player, but also that he can stand out in the Premiership, as we've seen through many of his performances," said Young.

"I've been impressed by the commitment he has shown since arriving at Wasps and I believe Guy will only go from strength to strength over the next few years.

"The back-row is an extremely competitive area at Wasps and to have Guy extend his contract boosts that competition further.

"It's a great position for the club to be in having that level of strength in depth.”
