GREYHOUND have given themselves a fighting chance of staying in Midlands 4 West (North) following a fine 19-16 win over Bishop’s Castle.

The Hereford side are still second from bottom, but level on points with Market Drayton, who lost to Barton-under-Needwood.

Greyhound, still struggling with injuries, changed tactics for the match and it paid dividends.

Ex-Luctonians forward Mark Austin returned for his first full game for his old club to team up with number eight Lee Simpson and winger Ian Callaghan.

Greyhound started poorly and were5-0 down after seven minutes thanks to an unconverted try.

But Greyhound replied two minutes later with a try from flanker Elliot Phillips. Bishop’s Castle came back strongly though and kicked over two penalties before scoring another try. But within a minute of the second half, Greyhound reduced the arrears thanks to Oli Paton’s try, that was converted by Matt Eden. Castle kicked over another penalty, but despite Greyhound’s attack, they had to wait half an hour before scoring again, this time through Callaghan. Eden converted a very difficult kick to ensure Greyhound secured a vital win.

It was a different story for Bromyard though, who went down to league leaders Cleobury Mortimer 80-0. Ledbury gained a bonus point in a narrow 27-16 loss to Midlands 3 West (South) leaders Dunlop.
