LUCTONIANS' director of rugby Alex Davidson was delighted and relieved that his side's recent improved performances had been rewarded with a victory.

"It's a massive win for us," he said. "With a fortnight's break afterwards, it was really important to go into the Christmas break with that positive buzz.

"We have been getting so close for so long that if we hadn't got there today then we would really have been questioning ourselves.

"Hopefully that will tee us up, January is quite a kind month in terms of winnable fixtures on the list so fingers crossed we can carry this through."

"The former Birmingham and Solihull lock was quick to pay tribute to two of his teenage stars.

"Tom Jones and John Kelly are 19 years old but they have stood up to the challenge and learned quickly," he said.

"That is probably a benefit of the fact that they are so young, they are like sponges and do what they are told as opposed to thinking outside the box and trying to win it with some random move.

"John claimed every re-start and worked very hard.

"He picked up a yellow card but made the right decision - it was a yellow card or an immediate score but, as it was, we made Stourbridge work for another seven or eight minutes at scrummage to get the score by which stage he was almost back on the pitch and we had done enough."

Davidson believes that the win might be a key factor in a New Year revival.

"That might just be the turning point," he said. "That big mental boost that a win puts next to performance should see us clear and January gives us the perfect springboard to try to nibble our way back into mid-table."

It was a great start but we have started well in the last three or four games, scored first, gone on to score three and then put the hand brake on and let the opposition back in. That's a lack of confidence. I changed the approach a little and said to them that we are at home and have done some great things in the last few weeks, just put your chests out and believe in what we do. They seemed to do that today, there was a real belief in what we did and we have come away with a good win.

The commitment has been there all season and we have never doubted it. These are local guys - they are a bit small physically then everyone else so they have to play with 110% commitment and they do that regularly.
