LUCTONIANS took a major step towards consolidating their position in National Two North with a first ever win over local rivals Stourbridge.

"It's a massive win for us after three or four weeks of getting close to the big teams," said man-of-the-match Tom Jones.

"It's great to get a win over a major team like Stourbridge and now we can look forward to Christmas and the New Year.

"I was very pleased with my own performance.

"I have been in and out of the team all season but now I'm getting a bit of consistency at fly-half.

"The forwards did very well for me and that made my life a lot easier, so full credit to them."

Jones was quickly in the heart of the action as Luctonians scored a first-minute try to get their day off to an excellent start.

The home side attacked from the kick-off and Jones' break and pass sent in Adam Knight who made it almost all the way to the line before putting Jimmy Norris over in the corner.

"It was a perfect start," said Jones.

"It's not been the case that we haven't started well for most of the season, last week against Harrogate we started well and then dropped off with 20 minutes to go.

"Today we saw the result through and won the game for the boys."

Geraint Langdon's conversion attempt drifted wide of the mark but, after the home side had done well to resist a prolonged spell of Stourbridge pressure, the centre soon had a chance to make his mark with the boot.

He landed a 19th minute penalty when Stourbridge were penalised for a high tackle.

And then, after a clearing kick by Joe Doyle had taken Luctonians back into Stourbridge territory, landed a second five minutes later to extend the lead to 11-0.

Langdon's best effort of the game, however, came on 32 minutes when he landed a conversion from the touchline after the home pack had powered over for hooker Jordan Street to get the touch down.

A push-over try by skipper Nigel Makaruki, converted by Gareth Bown, cut the half-time margin to 18-7.

But, early in the second period, another Langdon penalty added to the home advantage before Luctonians scored the try of the game.

Jones' deft kick forward was perfectly weighted for the buccaneering John Kelly to pick up and power over.

"John Kelly looks a real prospect and has done ever since he came through," said Jones. "He is a very talented lad and he will kick on with his rugby career - he has a very bright future in front of him."

"Langdon again added the kick and although, with Kelly off the field with a yellow-card, Stourbridge cut arrears with a converted penalty try, the home side held on for a vital win.

"We had a wake-up call in the week," said Jones. "We knew that we needed to be on form and in position wherever we go to play and that just seemed to carry on into the game against Stourbridge.

"We just waited for it to come, kept our patience and kept it together and the result was a deserved one and shows that we don't deserve to be where we are in the league.

"Now we need to re-group and nor get too far ahead of ourselves. We are still in the bottom area of the table so we still need to work, get out that position and take each game as it comes.

"If we can keep playing as we did today, then I see no reason when we can't compete with the bigger teams and keep those 'Ws' coming."
