Caldy 43 pts Luctonians 36

LUCTONIANS were left with just a single point to show from a try-laden National Two North encounter at old rivals Caldy.

The Mortimer Park club went over for six scores, to earn their bonus point, and caused the home side plenty of anxious moments before the Merseysiders' victory was achieved.

Caldy had made a promising start but it was Luctonians who put the first points on the board with Will Burton intercepting and racing 80 yards to touch down.

Geraint Langdon added the extras.

A try by prop Derek Salisbury tied the scores again before Luctonians regained the lead with a try from winger Alex Rumsey which Langdon converted.

Three home tries, however, began to take the game away from the Herefordshire side with Caldy establishing a 29-14 lead at the interval.

A try by Anthony Marfell, right at the start of the second period, raised Luctonians' spirits but, although Joe Doyle went over for his third try in two games on the 50 minute mark, the game looked out of reach when the home side led 43-24 with only 15 minutes to play.

Luctonians, however, showed plenty of resolve and set about reducing the margin.

Brad Talbot went over for a score on 70 minutes, with Langdon adding the conversion, and Will Sparrow cut arrears still further when he went over for his first Luctonians try two minutes later.

But that was the end of the heroics as Caldy, for whom early replacement Ben Jones scored 23 points, held on for their second win of the season.

Luctonians will be looking for a second successive home win when they entertain third-from-bottom Hull at Mortimer Park on Saturday.
