LUCTONIANS left it late before sealing a thrilling win in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at Mortimer Park.

As the game moved into stoppage time, the home side were trailing by just a single point.

But then skipper Dan Smith, who led by example throughout, broke away brilliantly and was just short of the line when he off-loaded to Adam Knight who went over for his second try of the game.

"It was all Smithy's running," acknowledged Knight. "He did that for us up at Stourbridge last week and he always capable of that. He's a wild card.

"But there were a lot of 'old boys' in there, the likes of Chris Jaques and Richard Jones, who put in a huge shift today."

While the experienced forwards did put in plenty of hard yards, it was the young players behind the scrum who frequently caught the eye.

With the young half-back pairing of Ben Williams and Will Burton getting the ball out well, there was plenty of scope for some fine running rugby on an excellent surface.

One of those who clearly relished the opportunity was Joe Doyle who marked his home debut after moving the short distance from Ludlow with an impressive two-try display to take the man-of-the-match honours.

"Two tries on my home debut is great," he said.

"I've enjoyed the step up from Ludlow. It's nice to have time and space on the ball and I love the speed of the game. I think I suit that quite well.

"It is a big step up but I have worked hard in pre-season to get to where I am.

"We deserved our first win today - the last two weeks have been tough with a bonus point in the first game and a near miss in the second at Stourbridge.

"They could have been winnable games but the first 10 or 20 minutes killed us in both of them.

"But today we didn't really falter - I'm sure the coaches will give us things to focus on before next Saturday, but it's a young side with masses of promise.

"The talent is unbelievable and it's just great to play with that many talented players.

"Huddersfield were were a well-drilled side with a strong pack. We fronted up well although we could have played our possession rugby a bit better.

"Joe has been down for a few pre-seasons in the past to join us and has always stood out but gone back to Ludlow," said Luctonians director of rugby Alex Davidson.

"It's great that we have been able to give him a chance and he has grabbed it with both hands today."

In what has become a pattern over the first three games of the season, Luctonians conceded an early try with a push-over in the corner.

But Geraint Langdon quickly cut the gap with a penalty before Alex Rumsey and Doyle combined well to set up Knight's first try which Langdon converted with an excellent kick.

Two kicks from Joel Hinchcliffe put the Yorkshiremen back in front and they extended their lead with a try from Michael Clarke.

Doyle, however, powered over for his first try in first-half stoppage time with Langdon's successful kick giving the home side an interval advantage.

Dan Jeffrey's try, converted by Hinchcliffe, restored the Huddersfield lead.

But prolonged pressure by the home side was eventually rewarded when Doyle went over again.

Langdon's kick drifted wide and when another penalty kick also missed the target, the pressure was on.

Smith, however, lifted his side once more to play in Knight for the decisive try, with Langdon adding the extras.

While the home supporters may been on the edge of their seats, Davidson had expected the final breakthrough.

"Ten minutes before the end, my heart stopped pounding quite so hard," he said.

"We had that surge up the field, we looked settled and when the boards start banging it usually brings in a try.

"And it came, which was great.

"We've got that win on the board now and hopefully that becomes a trend."
