LIFE-MEMBER Guy Griffiths believes Hereford Rugby Club will be playing at their new headquarters in two years’ time.

The former chairman said he was relieved the Court of Appeal had this week cleared the way for the club’s new home and future in Hampton Bishop.

The development will give the club a new base with four adult pitches, two junior pitches, a 3G training pitch, an indoor training facility, a clubhouse and a 400-seat spectator stand. 190 new homes are also planned.

“This is a great achievement for everybody involved,” said Griffiths.

“We would like to thank all those people in the council who have supported this project. Without their help and support it would not have happened.

“Numerous members of the public that were interested enough to ask me and others, over the last three years how it was going. They realised this was a legacy for the youth of the county and a modern project that the city was crying out for, both in much needed homes and sporting facilities.

“It has always been my plan that, as soon as we have got planning permission, to get on the site and start building.

“We will definitely be playing at Wyeside this season and next season – I think it will probably take two years to develop.

“It has been a year since we got the plans done so I think we will leave it a week and have a look at it again next week.

“We have to pull it all together and the costs have gone up since we last looked at it.”

Three judges rejected Hampton Bishop Parish Council’s challenge to the plan.

Griffiths said: “The two appeals have been mammoth, both in time and money but I am confident that national House Builders Bloors will ensure the rugby club is delivered in the manner than it was originally intended by the landowner, the council and Hereford Rugby Club.

“I would like to thank the landowner who has not only gifted the land to the club, but has funded the building of this sporting facility, and the seven-year project out of his own pocket, since its inception.”
