Wise stars in Ledbury's plate triumph

LEDBURY Rugby Club mounted a tremendous second-half fight-back to seal a 19-12 victory over Moseley to win the under-14 North Midlands Youth Plate.

Team manager Ken Smith was thrilled with Ledbury, who fought back from 12-0 interval deficit to clinch the crown at Dudley Kingswinford.

Man-of-the-match Harry Wise scored a superb try for Ledbury, who were inspired by an inspirational half-time team-talk.

“It was very much a game of two halves,” said manager Smith.

“After a good opening few minutes, Ledbury struggled against some powerful Moseley running and coming to terms with some of the referees interpretations.

“Moseley capitalised with two well-worked tries down their left wing.”

However, Ledbury looked a changed team after the interval and soon laid siege to the Moseley line.

After a series of short range tap penalties number-8 Morgan Nelson burrowed over to score with Johnny Andrews adding a fine conversion.

Ledbury were soon back in possession but it took a moment of individual brilliance from fly-half Wise to evade several Moseley tacklers before outstripping the cover down the left wing from his own half for an equalising try. Andrews’ conversion put Ledbury in to the lead for the first time.

Ledbury were now in the ascendency and wrapped up the win a few minutes later.

A fine sweeping move allowed outside centre Rowan Smith to score the game’s final try.

Ledbury closed out the game with few alarms to celebrate the end of an excellent season with a memorable plate success.
