SCRUM-HALF Nathan Roy-Smith will be bringing down the curtain on his Luctonians career, at Sedgley Park this weekend.

Worcester-based Roy-Smith is leaving for a new adventure in Australia after three-and-a-half successful seasons at Mortimer Park.

Teenage half-back Ben Williams, who has impressed in his three starts for the first team, is sitting on the wings and is committed to the club for next season.

Luctonians’ director of rugby, Alex Davidson, said: “Nathan has done well for us. Ben’s speed of service and skill-set is excellent. Tom Jones and Ben have about 10 games at this level between them, and the will develop by playing.”

Luctonians have just two matches remaining and, for the second time in a month, failed to see off a promotion-challenger last weekend.

Luctonians had Darlington Mowden Park on the ropes at Kingsland and the visitors needed a late try to escape with a 26-18 win.

Turning around a 12-0 deficit at half-time, tries from Dan Smith and full-back Will Burton, and a Tom Jones penalty saw the Luctonians side edge into a one-point lead.

Darlington, reduced to 13 men following two yellow cards, responded – but a pushover try grounded by hooker Jordan Street gave the 18-year-old Jones a chance to put Lucs back ahead.

The conversion drifted wide, and Zylon McGaffin stepped over for the away side with the last play keeping their season alive with a four-try bonus point.

Davidson said: “Because we built up getting a scalp, there was disappointment afterwards but everybody who played can be proud of that performance.

“You only have to look at the Darlington reaction at full-time to know that.

“The difference between finishing mid-table and towards the top is being able to replicate that.”

Lucs have done just that twice in two home games, last month pushing second-place Stourbridge right to the whistle in a 20-15 loss.

And they will be hoping to take that form on the road on Saturday when they take on Sedgley Park, currently on a five-game win streak.

Hooker Chris Condliffe will not be making the trip up north – with a haematoma in last week’s game putting him on crutches four to six weeks – but Lucs will have prop Richard Jones and flanker Brad Talbot back available.
