HEREFORD Cathedral School could be looking forward to a couple of promising years based on the relative youth of their first-team squad.

"The season has been good and we have five fifth-years in the team which is probably unheard of," said coach Guy Griffiths.

"We've worked on them and we've got probably another six or seven fifth-years who will come through next year.

"We should end up with two good sevens sides and we'll see how we do against the big boys then."

Director of sport Richard Skyrme is optimistic about the medium and the short-term future of his team.

"A third of the starting line-up have got two years left and we are working hard to try to attract some outsiders to join," he said. "There is a nice feel to the rugby at Hereford Cathedral School at the moment.

"We're training them hard, they are responding to that; the fitness levels are better and their skill levels are improving - a couple of the tries today were right out of the top drawer.

"The pace and handling in the back line has been a feature of the season.

"We were very chuffed to beat Kings School Worcester, RGS Worcester, King Edward's School Birmingham - some big names - it's made one or two people open their eyes a bit and we play a good brand of rugby.

"We're going to train over Christmas - we have three first-team games left next term - and we want to keep the fitness up for the Sevens tournaments to come.

"I'm not saying that we will get trophies but we will beat a few schools that perhaps we normally wouldn't."
