Report: Greyhound Rugby Club beat Redditch 33-17 to move into second round of Midlands Junior Vase
10:03pm Saturday 28th September 2013 in Rugby
Greyhound booked a place in the Midlands Junior Vase second round with a dogged performance in a 33-17 home win over Redditch, writes MIKE TANSLEY.
Early pressure told for Greyhound as Ed Howarth collected a floated pass and handed off a couple of players to touch down inside the first five minutes, a try which scrum-half Chris Morris duly converted.
Redditch replied almost immediately with an unconverted try, but it wasn’t long before the slick off-loading from the Greyhound pack proved too good as Ali Paton rounded off a move under the posts.
This was followed by two tries in quick succession from Elliot Phillips and Morris which saw the home side take a 28-5 lead into the interval.
Redditch came out of the traps flying at the start of the second half.
It took some determined defending to limit them to only one converted try before Greyhound fly-half, Matt Swain, got over the whitewash after a quickly-taken tap penalty.
Redditch managed to score again but strong defence, despite a red card for Swain, saw Greyhound through the rest of the game and into the hat for the second round.
