Full-time: Pegasus Juniors 1 Wellington 3
WELLINGTON scored three goals in the last nine minutes to seal victory over Herefordshire rivals Pegasus in this afternoon’s derby at Old School Lane.
Paul Jones struck twice and Andy Price notched Wellington’s third goal to clinch an unlikely victory for Derek Williams’ men.
Jason Prosser headed Pegasus ahead in the 21st minute of this West Midlands League Premier Division clash.
Juniors missed a succession of excellent chances early in the second period. Goalkeeper Dan Tecza made two vital saves for Wellington.
Wellington made Pegasus pay a heavy price for the missed chances and avenged a 4-0 reverse to their city rivals earlier in the campaign.
Jones pounced with nine minutes remaining to level the match and he put Wellington ahead with a fine shot from the edge of the box in the 87th minute.
Price sealed Wellington’s victory two minutes later, seizing on to a lapse in the Pegasus defence, to knock the ball into an empty net from close range.
It was a remarkable turnaround as the derby came to life in the final 10 minutes.
Prosser gave Pegasus the lead, heading home Will Loughman’s right-wing cross despite pressure from Wellington skipper Dale Withers.
He wasn’t far away from doubling his tally in the 37th minute, narrowly heading wide a free kick.
The lively Jones created Wellington’s best first-half chance two minutes before the interval.
Jones twisted and turned inside the box but his curling effort from a tight angle drifted wide of the far post.
Pegasus dominated the early part of the second half and should have put the game to bed.
Loughman burst through the midfield and his 56th minute low drive fizzed wide of Tecza’s left-hand post.
Pegasus almost doubled their advantage in the 60th minute after a ball from the left evaded Jimmy Moreton and fell to Loughman whose close-range drive was saved by the boot of Tecza.
Moreton shot narrowly wide and, soon afterwards, only a vital save from Tecza kept Wellington in the game.
Loughman picked out Cory Hyde with an excellent chipped pass and the striker’s close-range strike was somehow parried by the body of Tecza.
Pegasus continued to create better chances and Mark Davies powerfully headed over after fine play from Moreton.
However, for all Pegasus' effort, Wellington levelled from a rare raid in the 81st minute.
Pegasus' confidence suddenly disappeared and Wellington took full advantage.
