PEGASUS turned on a goal feast for their sponsors and guests as they saw off Smethwick Rangers in an entertaining encounter at Old School Lane.

Three goals in the first 20 minutes gave Juniors a sound base and, although Rangers pulled a couple back in the lead-up to half time, goals either side of the interval, which completed a fine hat-trick for Kiea Cowley, underlined the home side's superiority on the day.

"We asked the players to go out and express themselves and we got a great start," said manager Chris Hyde.

"We know that we are not going to win the league this season so you have to get something out of football.

"It's not in my nature to scrape out wins unless you're going to win the league or you're scrapping to avoid relegation, you have to get some enjoyment out of it."

That enjoyment was clearly evident in a free-flowing game on an excellent surface.

Cowley made his first impact on the game with just six minutes played, seeing his shot rattle a post for Tom Dawson to fire in the rebound.

Two minutes later, Danny Hill, who just shaded Cowley for man of the match, added a second when he headed in a cross from Sam Pearson.

Hill thumper a header against the bar from Keith Jones' cross before he and Pearson were both involved in Cowley's first after 20 minutes, when the youngster ran on to a pass, rounded keeper Gurtej Bhandal and shot home.

Gurjit Singh struck twice in three minutes - the second an excellent strike from the edge of the area - to drag Rangers back into the game.

But more good play down the right by Pearson allowed Cowley to re-establish a two-goal margin two minutes before the interval.

Pearson, who could have had a hat-trick himself with a little more composure in front of goal, missed a good chance early in the second period before Cowley rounded off his treble with the goal of the game.

The ball fell to him on the edge of the area and his outside-of-the-boot, first-time effort sailed into the net - a sublime finish.

"That was a bit special, with the outside of his left foot as well," said Hyde.

"Kiea is a real talent, at times he ends up doing too much work which is a nice failing, and he runs himself into the ground. He works really hard and we have tried to take a little of his work-rate off him.

"Sometimes it can cost us, but today it worked well."

Hyde also had some words of praise for Hill.

"Danny is top quality and has been a great signing for us," he said.

"He still tells me he's better at centre-half. He was fantastic today, a great performance.

Overall, Hyde was please with the afternoon.

"We have some very good players," he said. "Everyone knows that we lost a lot of players this season but we have replaced then with some very good players and now it's all about finding a way to play that suits the players we've got.

"We try to entertain and we have a lot of talent wrapped up in young, inexperienced lads."

The match was preceded by Juniors' first ever sponsors lunch with more than 40 guests enjoying a meal prepared in the club's own kitchen and their newly and impressively extended club house.

Director Mark Williams gave a potted history of the club and thanked all of those who had played important parts in getting Pegasus to the level they are at today.

He praised the goodwill and enthusiasm of individuals and firms who are continuing to support a club which now boasts 20 teams but needs to raise £90,000 a year just to run as it approaches its 60th anniversary in 2015.
