London Olympics provide boost for Eardisland Bowling Club

A HEREFORDSHIRE bowling club will have good cause to remember London 2012.

For Eardisland BC have been awarded £48,000 of National Lottery funding to upgrade their facilities from the Inspired Facilities Fund, part of the £135m Places People Play legacy programme which ensures that the magic of the home Olympic and Paralympic Games will be remembered all across the country.

Eardisland will gain new changing areas, toilets and green-keeping storage.

The improvements will also see an enlarged clubhouse which will be used for carpet bowls in the winter months, as well as new furnishings.

“This is very exciting news as we can now demolish several almost derelict buildings with new purpose-built changing rooms, toilets, storage and extending the social area,” said Eardisland chairman Phil Lynne.

“The new build will blend in well in the leisure area and conservation area it is situated in and then will considerably improve the facilities for the members and visitors to the club.”

Eardisland Bowling Club was formed 80 years ago and can count former England captain Tracey Powell among the hundreds of people it has encouraged to get into the sport.

“This is a huge win for Eardisland,” said Bill Wiggin MP.

“Congratulations on your winning bid and thank you to Sport England and the volunteers who put the bid together.”

A further £10m funding round has been launched by Sport England to help local community groups to upgrade their facilities.
