Herefordshire's Middleton Cup bid starts with defeat in Somerset

HEREFORDSHIRE’S Middleton Cup campaign began with a crushing defeat by Somerset at North Petherton.

The day started badly with traffic on the M5 and the match did not start until 3.30pm.

As the match should have begun at 2pm, Somerset were kind enough to accept the late start when they could have claimed the tie.

Somerset won on every rink in securing an easy victory by 162 shots to 86 with only two Herefordshire rinks managing to keep their defeat within single figures.

Sean Jones’ rink won 12 ends and performed well against a strong home rink, fighting back from 16-6 down to finally lose 21-18.

The rink skipped by Barry Payne also played well and trailed by only 17-14 after 17 ends, but Somerset finished strongly for a 23-15 win.

Phill Williams’ rink started badly and were down 14-2 after eight ends before reducing the deficit to 14-10, but the hosts finished strongly to win by 26-13, while the rink skipped by Mike Ricketts were down 15-5 after 10 ends but won only four more ends, losing 30-14.

M Smith’s rink were down 21-4 after 11 ends, they won only five of the remaining ends before finally losing by 32-15.

The heaviest defeat was sustained by Phil Middleton’s rink who won only seven ends in a defeat by 30-11.

n HEREFORDSHIRE ladies were beaten by Leicestershire at Narborough.

Herefordshire were six shots up after 15 ends but by the 18th end Leicestershire had taken the lead by 10 shots and went on to win by 17 shots.

The winning rink was skipped by Val Pedlingham (Eastnor), Pat Farmer (Hereford BC), Jean Jones (Castle Green) and Pat Yorke (Eastnor) with a score of 27–13.
