ROGER Chilman and new co-driver Brian Thomas had a tough time in the Team GMF Wyedean Forest Rally before securing a fifth-place finish.
A blanket of snow on Thursday night and the subsequent freezing conditions had left the gravel roads extremely treacherous.
"I am very suprised to have finished fifth,” confessed the Herefordshire driver.
“This morning we would have been lucky to be looking at top 20.
“I did consider packing it in at service but it was just a case of surviving in these conditions.
Another Herefordshire driver, Scott Partridge exceeded expectations when he finished 33rd after being seeded 98th.
“I would have expected to finish in the 60s or 70s as there were a lot of very fast cars and drivers in the event this year,” he said.
