Narrow loss to Newcastle

WESTSIDE'S disappointing campaign in the West Midlands Netball League Division 1 continued with a 44-40 defeat by Staffordshire-based Newcastle Town.

Having drawn the first-round fixture 42-42, Westside were hopeful of a much-needed win.

With players missing due to work commitments and injury, the Herefordshire side started with a new formation of Helen Hancock GS, Kerry Amos GA, Ella Langford WA, Jaydee Hunt C, Anna Mulderrig WD, Sophie Wright GD, Kelly Stevens GK.

Both sides started strongly and the game was kept within a narrow margin throughout.

Both teams struggled to maintain concentration and consistency, making unforced errors and allowing their opposition to take an advantage.

But neither team were able to pull away into a big enough lead to secure the game.

Excellent shooting by the Newcastle GS and GA was the advantage that saw them put in a faultless 100% shooting performance and secure them the four-goal win in the last quarter.

Mulderrig played her first whole game for Westside and put in a strong performance against a very experienced and dominant WA for Newcastle.

Mulderrig linked well through the centre court with Hunt and Langford but despite the strong and experienced efforts of Stevens and Wright in the defensive circle for Westside, the Herefordshire side were unable to convert turnovers into goals.

The player-of-the-match award went to Kelly Stevens at GK.
