CHLOE Wheeler led the county athletes hope as she finished in the top 100 places in the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships.

The John Kyrle High School pupils finished in 89th position, over 100 places better than she came last year in the Senior Girls event.

After making it through school, district and county competitions, the top athletes from schools in the Hereford and Worcestershire area headed to Leeds at the weekend to represent their county in the race.

They were competing against the best in the country, in races with up 350 athletes from 44 counties in each event. It was a tough competition, but an event all athletes aspire to qualify for each year.

The wind, sleet, snow and cold added to the challenges they faced this time.

In the Senior Girls event Wheeler finished ahead of Girls’ Team Captain, Abbie Saker in 98th while Abbie Roberts (Hereford Sixth Form College) finished 322nd.

The team’s top finisher in the Intermediate Boys was Scott Jones (Wigmore High School, Leominster) in 236th place while Samuel Roberts of Lady Hawkins' School finished in 318th.
