A DISABLED clay shooter has claimed another medal to add to his impressive collection.

Mat Goodwin, who lives between Almeley and Eardisley, gained bronze at the IPC/ISSF Par-Clay International Grand Prix in Bergamo, near Milan in Italy.

The 38-year-old farmer did lead the competition right up to the semi-final stage, where he was tied with two other athletes.

But Goodwin missed the gold and silver match by a single target in a sudden death shoot-off.

"The Para-clay International Grand Prix are the top international events for disabled trap shooters," said Goodwin.

"They are being run as test events for the proposed inclusion of clay shooting into the Paralympics.

"I mainly train at Griffin Lloyd shooting ground near Knighton.

"They have been extremely helpful, without their support I would almost certainly not have had the results I have.

"They have recently updated their Olympic discipline layouts and is now one of the best training facilities in the UK."

Goodwin became paralysed following a car accident in 1996 when he was 18 and started clay shooting 10 years later.

He has qualified for the Wales Olympic Trap able bodied senior team for the last four years and understands he is the only wheelchair user to have achieved this.

This year along, Goodwin finished second in the para class at the Costa Del Sol Grand Prix and was trap winners at the English Open Olympic and British Grand Prix Olympic.

His other achievements include gaining a silver medal at the 2009 FITASC UT World Championship and finishing fifth at the IPC World Champion Paralympic test event in Suhl, Germany.
