A NUMBER of Herefordshire athletes took part in the World Masters Mountain Running Championships.

Ed Davies, of Maldwyn Harriers and Mercia Fellrunners, ran in a very competitive over 60 event at Betws y Coed in North Wales.

He had moved into third positions before being overhauled and having to settle for sixth in a time of 44 minutes 55 seconds.

Mick Ligema (Croft Ambrey) faced stiff competition in the over-55 category, but finished a creditable 29th out of 46 in 51.19, while Steve Herington, the county over 65 cross country champion, finished eighth in ahead of 28 other V65s.

The Hereford Couriers member was fresh from competing in the World Veterans 5km cross country and half marathon in Lyon.

Guy Whitmarsh (Croft Ambrey) ran the same race, crossing the line in 54.03 to finish seventh out of 21 V70s.

Meanwhile, Croft Ambrey's Sue Davies, coming back after injury, ran the longer course and had a fine result by finishing 10th out of 15 V50s in a time of 64.50.

Next year's event will be in Italy.
