ROSS Golf Club were blessed with perfect weather as they hosted three major events in their annual calendar.

First up was the Collins Flag medal which attracted 79 members and saw septuagenarian Doug David, a 14 handicapper, play an almost flawless 18 holes.

With nine pars and two birdies he carded a gross 78, net 64 medal score, to win the competition and see his handicap cut to 12 as a result.

Another Ross senior, Phil Macfarlane, was runner-up with a net 67 which means he will now be playing off a reduced 22 handicap.

He was followed by Paul Element, also with a net 67 and he acknowledged the investment he has made in improving his game through the club’s School of Golf.

His handicap has fallen from 11 to seven this year.

The Keene Cup was supported by 92 seniors and the 44 points scored by Richard Mackley took the prize.

Mackley also praised his coaching from the club’s assistant professional Oli Leett.

He holed a number of key putts, especially on his back nine on which he scored a massive 26 points. Runner-up, 26-handicapper Scott Thomson, also scored 44 but missed out on countback, while Martin Pimlow was third on 43.

The Annual Seniors’ Open always attracts visitors from far and wide and 85 per cent of the 148 golfers taking part represented 42 different clubs.

As is customary it was the home players who took the spotlight and Andrew Baldwin's 44 points shared top spot with John Irvine from Newport GC.

Another Newport member, Frank Fahey, scored 42 while Steve Bartholomew was delighted to be among the prizes on 41, as were Colin Price and Scott Thomson, both on 39.
