MEMBERS of Hereford's Combat Academy put in outstanding performances at the British Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships.

Five Academy members were crowned British champions following the two-day event which was held in Coventry, Warwickshire.

But that wasn't where the success ended as three others collected silver medals, while a further ten won bronze.

Competing in the blue belt 100.5 kg category, Ash Amos was looking to add to his recent win at the Welsh Open championships, and he did not disappoint.

After several good wins in the early rounds, including a 48-0 win, Amos pulled off a great final victory to take home the gold medal and with it the championship title.

Having won the British Open title several times at junior and juvenile level, 16-year-old Ben Oliver took a huge step up to compete in the adult -64 kg category.

The teenager was in great form, defeating all four of his opponents with arm-bar submissions to take the gold medal.

Another former junior British champion, 15-year-old Ryan Hill, stepped up to fight in the juvenile -65 kg category. He defeated three opponents to take the gold medal.

A bronze medallist in 2013 and a silver medal last year, Dali Hopkins was looking to make it third time lucky and capture the elusive British Open title.

Competing in the girls -46 kg category, she had some very tough fights en-route to the British title.

Making it a family weekend to remember, her mum, Kelly, and dad, Baz, also competed in the championships. Her mum had several tough fights in the women's -58.5 kg category, recording a couple of good wins before narrowly losing in the final.

Competing in the -82.3 kg category, after a couple of good wins, Baz lost by referee's decision in the semi-final and so had to settle for bronze medal.

The largest junior category of the day was the boys -27 kg category, with 15 competitors. Alex Quinn defeated his first two opponents before losing in the final and having to settle for the silver medal.

Jamie Law collected a hard fought for silver medal in the purple belt -100.5 kg category and a bronze in the open weight.

There were also bronze medals for Emma Baker (who won two), Rufus Spliier, Robynn Quinn, Ethan Broderick, Ty Husbands, Leigh Bull and Darrell James.
