A FATHER and son motor racing team from Herefordshire are gearing up for life in the fast lane by entering a team in a national racing championship.

Racing driver Rob Hall and his dad, David, are in the process of launching Rob Hall Racing which is set to take part in the 2015 Formula Ford Kent Championships.

The Bromyard-based family - Rob runs Bromyard Tyres and lives on the family farm in Thornbury - already have an unnamed driver onboard and hope to secure a second shortly.

The project is a change of direction for Rob who will engineer the motors instead of driving them, and he has the full backing of his dad.

"I've been involved in motorsport for years but there is a limit how far we can go at the moment," said David.

"We've spent most of this season getting ready to run a team next year.

"We have one driver signed up for Rob's car next year. I can't say who that is at this stage, unfortunately.

"We don't know when we will name the second driver as yet."

He said the venture would cost a little under £40,000 per car, with his son taking on the engineering role.

"He's 24 now and has been involved with cars for years. He's a good engineer," added David.

The Formula Ford field is expected to be at least 20 strong, with David saying he would be "very happy" with a top five finish.

Rob, meanwhile, cemented his racing credentials with a second placed finish in the recent Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone.

Supported by his dad and engineers Richard Morgan and John Taylor, he finished less than half a second off winner Wayne Boyd, a former British Formula Ford champion.

"The event attracted over 120 drivers," said David.

"They came to it from all over the world including the United States, Scandinavia and Germany.

"We were fairly well off the pace at first but then Richard (Morgan) and John (Taylor) made some adjustments."

He said Richard would stay with the new team while John will if he's available.

Formula Ford has become a popular event around the world in recent times.

The cars in this category are powered by a 1600cc Kent engine, and there are different classes for new and older chassis.
