SOME very quick drivers among a full entry for Herefordshire Motor Club's Humfrys & Symonds Builth Showground Stages promised to make it an interesting competition.

More than half of last year’s competitors were returning again this year and most spectators were expecting another battle between Damian Cole, in his 2000cc + mk11 Escort, and Ian Evans, this year in his 1600cc Nova.

But, as it turned out, Cole's closest rival was Len Jones who came in second 17 seconds behind his rival.

Evans came home in third place with Theo Bengry just four seconds behind.

Fifth place went to Julian Wilks who was there mainly to test his newly built 1400 Nova Skippy.

The impressive Cole set six fastest times over the 14 stages.

The most popular finishers, however, were Les Skeet and Rob Billingham who finished 12 overall and third in class.

Billingham was the youngest competitor and completed his first rally just a week past his 14th birthday.

Of the top 10 finishers, six were Herefordshire Motor Club members with the club's highest-placed competitors being Evans and Ian Davis who added a class win to their third place overall.

"Herefordshire Motor Club would like thank all those involved with the event, of which there are many," said club spokeswoman Karen Phelps.

Next year's event is scheduled for October 31.
