A BROMYARD teenager has won the Junior Saloon National Autograss Championship for the second time.

Rhys Griffiths stormed to success at Thornborough, North Yorkshire.

And it was a family affair because the 16-year-old's sister Katie finished sixth.

Katie, 14, was the only girl competing at the event that featured 85 drivers.

"Rhys started when was 12 and won the nationals in 2013," said Rhys' dad Mark Griffiths, who won the Nationals in 2008 and the British Championships in 2010.

"He then won the British title last year then the nationals again.

"Next year, Rhys moves into the men's category because juniors are only for 12 to 16-year-olds.

"But I'm confident he will do well."

To complete the family affair, Rhys and Katie's mum Claire has also competed in the sport and is a former national and British autograss champion.

Mark said it was a proud day watching his children taking part in the nationals.

"They have different qualifier races and the top eight go to the final," explained Mark.

"It was really good seeing them both make the final," he said.

Katie also started autograss racing when she was 12 and achieved her first heat win at the Nationals.

She also carried off the prize for best turned out car.

Mark added that Rhys will share Katie's Mini saloon car for his first few races in the men's section before upgrading to a Mini pick-up super saloon, that has a 2.8 litre race engine fitted in the back.
