Hereford United fan Steve Field's wedding call sees him miss Torquay clash
4:35pm Thursday 3rd May 2012 in Local By Paul Rogers
HEREFORD United fan Steve Field is at a wedding on Saturday and will not be able to watch the Bulls.
Steve, who runs the Elite six-a-side football league, follows Richard O’Kelly’s men up and down the country and was at Crawley to witness the team pull off a remarkable win to keep their hopes of staying in the Football League alive.
But instead of cheering on his beloved team on Saturday, the 34-year-old will be congratulating friends Neil Richards and Nannette Wakefield tying the knot.
The service is at Parkfields Country House in Pontshill, near Ross-on-Wye, at 2pm — just an hour before kick-off.
“I am really gutted to miss the game and I want to listen to it, but Nannette works in my office and said she would kill me if I did,” said Steve, who works with Nannette at Kingspan Insulation in Kingsland.
“She did say that I could get Twitter updates though if I want.
“I haven’t got a choice in the matter as they are both close friends.”
Steve, who lives in Pembridge, did not think Hereford’s fate would go down to the wire and believes that Saturday’s win at Crawley will now give the team the momentum they need to stay up.
“It has given us a glimmer of hope and renewed optimism when it seemed that our season was fading away,” he said.
“I was at the Brighton game in 1997 and it was gutting to get relegated, probably more so then because there were a lot of part-time teams in the Conference.
“No one wants to get relegated, but I don’t think there’s much difference between the bottom end of the Football League and the top of the Conference.
“We could end up going to Wembley if we were in the FA Trophy final or the play-offs.”
