HEREFORDSHIRE trainer Venetia Williams has been chosen as this year’s winner of the award for ‘The Outstanding Contribution made by a Lady to Jump Racing’.
It follows last year’s Grand National victory by Mon Mome – a possible runner in Friday’s Cheltenham Gold Cup before he returns to Aintree next month - and two other winners at the Cheltenham Festival 12 months ago.
The presentation was being made on Thursday during Ladies’ Day at Cheltenham.
A horse from the county that could be worth keeping an eye out for on Friday is trainer Richard Lee’s Fighting Chance.
He’s poised to run in the Grand Annual Chase at 5.15pm – the final race of the Cheltenham Festival. After three victories in a row, he’s rated a decent prospect.
If Fighting Chance were to win, it would be in front of a sell-out crowd at the final day of the festival. Few tickets remained at the start of this week, and they were expected to be snapped up quickly.
After the Cheltenham Festival, the focus moves on to Aintree and the Grand National on 10 April.
The same two Herefordshire trainers will come into focus that day.
Mon Mome will be bidding to win back-to-back Grand Nationals, while Richard Lee is set to be represented by Le Beau Bai. The horse was sent off the 4-1 favourite for last December’s Coral Welsh National at Chepstow, finishing third. At seven years old, he’s still young and could progress further.
The next two fixtures at Hereford Racecourse are on Wednesdays 24 and 31 March when the first races are currently scheduled for 2.30pm and 2.10pm respectively.
Grandstand admission is £15 (£14 when booked in advance), while accompanied children aged under 16 enter free of charge. Find out more at www.hereford-racecourse.co.uk.
