Burton Albion doubt over Hereford United's former Wales defender Ryan Green

RYAN Green may be sidelined when Hereford United go in search of their first League 2 away win of the season at Burton Albion on Saturday.

The former Wales international suffered a dead leg in the Bulls’ goalless draw on Saturday and is facing a race against time to be fit for the trip to the Pirelli Stadium.

“Ryan is responding to treatment and we shall know in the next 24-48 hours whether he will be fit or not,” said Bulls chief John Trewick.

“We were hoping that he would train on Thursday but that is looking more doubtful now. And if he doesn’t train until Friday then it is more of a risk to include him.”

Green’s absence would be a blow for Hereford as he made a substantial contribution to the success of Hereford’s new three-man defence at Underhill.

The new system, which featured Darren Jones and Danny Blanchett alongside Green at the back with Keith Lowe and Ryan Valentine able to push forward on the flanks, will probably be persevered with against the league’s new boys who will have former Bulls skipper Tony James in their squad.

Hereford’s reserve players had a welcome outing on Tuesday when they travelled to Cardiff to take on the Championship club’s reserve side.

Matt Done scored both goals as Hereford won 2-0.

With everyone other than Green and long-term casualty Craig Jones available for selection, Trewick has plenty of choices for Saturday and for next Tuesday’s eagerly-awaited all-ticket local derby clash with Shrewsbury Town at Edgar Street.

“We haven’t played a league game at home for a while and the Shrewsbury match is a great one to return with,” said Trewick.

“I would be very disappointed if there is not a crowd of at least 4,000.”
