WESTFIELDS manager Sean Edwards has invited former Hereford player Carlos Moreira into pre-season training.

The winger, who played a number of games for Pegasus Juniors last season, featured for Westfields in their first pre-season game at Longlevans on Friday night.

"He has wanted to come to us for a while, but it wasn't right for us," explained Edwards.

"But I know he did particularly well for Robbo [Anthony Robbins] at Pegasus for the last part of the season, so I've kept it on the back burner.

"We've signed Kingsford Adjei, but he has got a slight injury, so we've a little short on the right hand side.

"So we've invited Carlos to join us."

Westfields will once again target a promotion push in the Midland Football League Premier Division after falling away during the second half of last season.

Edwards has already been busy adding to his squad, with Hay St Mary's captain Stuart Davies joining fellow new recruits Robbins, Lewis Platt and Matt Sysum.

Westfields opened their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Hellenic League outfit Longlevens; Craig Jones netting for Westfields.

Despite the defeat, Edwards was pleased with his team's performance.

"Our possession count was really high, we just lacked the killer instinct in front of goal," said Edwards.

"But it was their third game in pre-season, whereas it was our first.

"We started three weeks behind but I'm really pleased with how training has gone.

"We've had good numbers and there have been some really hard sessions with Tony James again coming in to help."

Meanwhile, the Midland League fixtures for August have been released.

Westfields start with a home tie against newcomers South Normanton Athletic on Saturday, August 12.

The Derbyshire outfit finished second in the East Midlands Counties League last season but were promoted to the MFL after West Bridgford opted not to go up.

Another new team then awaits Sean Edwards' side three days later when Westfields go to West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division winners Haughmond.

Then over the Bank Holiday weekend, Westfields host Coventry United on the Saturday (August 26) before going to Stourport Swifts two days later.
