LUCTONIANS captain Alex Smith says his side’s long overdue win last weekend cannot be a ‘flash in the pan’.

The Kingsland side stopped a 10-game losing streak by deservedly beating Sedgley Park 23-14 and are now six points above the National League 2 North relegation zone.

“This has to be the first building block to go on and win the majority of the remaining games,” said Smith.

“We said at the start of the season that potentially we’re a top six side. We haven’t shown that for the last 10 games, but thankfully we’ve got nine games to go and we can use this to hopefully kick on and at least get clear of the bottom and get somewhere that we think we deserve.

“Losing 10 on the bounce was pretty tough to take and while we stayed positive all the way and the belief hadn’t gone, to actually put it into practice and get the result we thoroughly deserved means a lot."

Smith was confident his side could win the game, despite their poor form.

“I think we always felt we had a good chance because we had more to play for than them.

“They are comfortably in mid table and have been cruising the last few weeks and as soon we we get near the bottom three, all our home grown boys start to fire up.

“Even after we conceded that early soft score, we knew we just had to stick to what we’re good at and we dug one out.”

Luctonians director of rugby Alex Davidson also hopes his side can now string a few wins together.

“In the previous two seasons we’ve managed to put runs together that have got us out of of trouble and the fact we’ve got the win without any injuries, with boys to come back, I’m sure it can only get better as pitches dry up,” said Davidson.

Luctonians now go to Chester this Saturday and Smith is looking for a better result than the one at Mortimer Park last October.

Lucs were well in control in that game, but late scores saw Chester win 32-31.

“With about 10 minutes to go we were about three scores up and we found a way to lose it, so we owe them,” said Smith.

“But we will now believe that we can beat anyone and we will go there full of belief.”

Davidson added that Chester will provide a different test to Sedgley Park, but believes his side have enough quality to win the match.

“Chester have certain danger men, their eight is certainly big for them, so we’ve got to nullify him, but on the back of our defence, we stopped the large Sedgley forwards and there’s no reason why we can’t stop him,” said Davidson.
