HEREFORD Rugby Club fell just short of a trip to Saracens’ Allianz Arena after an encouraging performance in the 24/Sevens Regional Finals.

The Wyesiders had earned their place in the Midlands play-offs, held at Moseley Rugby Club, Birmingham, after success at the Ledbury 7s, one of 32 local qualifier tournaments.

Despite being unable to make the next stage, Hereford Sevens star Mark Galpin spoke positively on the day:

“The 24/Sevens is a big deal, we never expected to get here so it’s a massive bonus," he said.

"Our guys don’t play in many tournaments like this and we’re thrilled to have that opportunity."

“When the summer comes you can either sit back and relax or do sevens, and we love the sport.

"It’s all about building speed and keeping up your fitness and having a laugh and a joke while we do it."

The inaugural 24/Sevens tournament, run by England Rugby, was introduced in light of the sports inclusion in this years Rio 2016 Olympics, where Team GB are sending both a men’s and women’s team for the sports first appearance in the Games.

As well as creating a competitive atmosphere, the community sevens series looks at growing rugby and increasing participation.

Galpin added: “I think the Olympics will bring a lot of kids through, start playing and it’s great for the county and sport in general."
