HUNDREDS of fans lined the streets of Hereford to greet their heroes on their return from Wembley.

Despite losing 4-1 in the FA Vase final Hereford FC fans gathered in their hundreds in celebration of the club's successful first season which has seen them win the Midland Football League Premier Division.

Fans lined the route from Widemarsh Gate to greet the players with rapturous applause. The team then travelled in an open top bus up Widemarsh Street while being followed by their flag waving fans.

The bus then turned left through High Town before being greeted at the Old House by fans and school children who they posed for photographs with.

Hereford Mayor Jim Kenyon joined the fans in his Hereford FC shirt and mayoral chain.

He said: "It's been a fantastic week and a massive privilege to lead so many Herefordians into Wembley.

"The result didn't matter but the atmosphere we created has really put Hereford on the map. The bus parade was also fantastic and a great way to show our appreciation of what they have done this season.

"Nobody would have bet on us making it to Wembley in our first season. This shows what it means for the city and the club who are doing a lot of work in the community."

Pupils of St Pauls Church of England Primary School were amongst those who celebrated with the players at the Old House and their pupils also went to FA Vase final at Wembley the day before.

Teacher Chris Vaughan said: "Five minutes after the game we had forgotten about the result as it didn't really matter as it was about the occasion and the day."
