HEREFORD Cathedral School between Christ College Brecon 18-10 to mark the 135th anniversary of rugby fixtures between the two schools.

Some surging runs by left winger Elis Ward led to HCS stretching Christ College's defence and, as the pressure mounted, so did the penalties.

HCS captain Oli Gaston took full advantage to put his team ahead.

Another penalty then gave the home team field position to drive a lineout from five metres out, pushing the scoreline to 8-0.

But there was a shift in momentum mid-way through the first half, with Christ College getting back into the game.

Good support play and fine decision-making gave the visitors valuable possession and territory, which culminated in a brilliant try to the Welsh centre, James Newey.

The half ended in favour of Christ College, 10-8.

But HCS came out after the break with the same gutso as they started the game.

Ward again featured prominently and scored a try from a well-worked backline attack.

He followed this up with a second try, created by the solid centre pairing of Will Butler and Jack Helme.

Brecon’s Newey continued to do his best to keep his side in the game, with some impressive direct running, but lacked the support to convert his attack into points.

HCS managed to hold on and seal the win.

The city school have made an impressive start to the season, with wins over Sir Thomas Rich’s and Malvern College, and will prepare confidently for their Natwest Cup tie against Old Swinford Hospital next week.
