SINKUMS manager Tony Chadwick has challenged his side to finish the job and get promoted after they stormed to the top of Hereford Times Herefordshire Football league Division Two.

The club are set to achieve back-to-back promotions after being reformed and are now two points clear of Kingstone Harriers following a comfortable 4-1 win against Hereford City.

“It was probably our best performance all season and the lads stepped up to the plate,” said Chadwick.

“We’ve got five games left so hopefully we can stay top and get promotion.”

Sinkums were formed in 2006 with their name coming from an old pool club based in Belmont Road.

Starting out as a Sunday League side, the city club, managed by Barry Hopkins, found instant success and soon switched to Saturday football.

They rose to the Herefordshire Football League Premier Division and finished fourth in 2012/13.

But the club folded, leading to Chadwick taking the reins. They won promotion from Division Three at the first attempt and have now won seven of their nine games in Division Two this campaign.

“We’ve got Daley Smith, who’s a quality player, our club captain Luke Barefoot, Nathan Scotford, who’s one of the youngest members of our squad, and Martin Adjei, who’s one of the best defenders in Herefordshire football,” said Chadwick.

“They are too good to play at the current standard, but we’re a family group and want to stick together.”

Sinkums were never in trouble against Hereford City and coasted to their three points.

Dave Wall opened the scoring after 14 minutes from the penalty spot after Smith was fouled in the box.

Chadwick said that Luke Payne normally takes spot-kick duties, so he was relieved when it went in.

“I was quite worried at the start, but Dave Wall took it and did well,” said Chadwick. A snap-shot from Barefoot drew a good save from Hereford City’s Paul Williams before Danny Williams hit a post direct from a corner.

Williams did double the lead after 33 minutes when his shot bobbled over Hereford City’s number one.

He then made it 3-0 from close range after being set up by Barefoot.

To their credit, Hereford City never gave in and got on the scoresheet when Calum Coull tapped him following a cross from Zak Turner. But Sinkum sealed the win eight minutes from time when Luke Payne rounded Paul Williams before stroking the ball home.

Sinkums' Dan Gillespie said the team dug deep to secure the three points.

“The conditions weren’t great, but we did what we had to do to,” he said.

“We’re aiming to get three points in each game and want to go into the league above and do well in it.

“We deserved the win and were more alive and alert.

“At the end of the day it’s about who wants it the most.”

Gillespie added that loyalty is a key part of the club’s ethos.

“We’re onto a second manager now and We have always had a lot of help,” he said.

“It’s all about everyone chipping in and doing their best. Everyone is loyal here and that’s what we need going into out tenth year anniversary.”
