PLAYERS past and present came together to celebrate another successful year of Marches League cricket at Presteigne.

Mark Wallace, captain and wicket-keeper of Glamorgan County Cricket Club, was guest speaker at the dinner held at Radnorshire Arms Hotel, while Presteigne skipper Billy Davies gave an account of the highlights of the season.

This included the remarkable victory over Shirebulls in August when Presteigne only travelled with eight players, resulting in tea lady Annie Davies stepping in at the 11th hour to make up the numbers.

Prizes were then awarded for outstanding achievements throughout the season.

Gary Rhodes won the best bowler award, Tom Williams was most improved player of the year and Davies received the Catch of the Season Cup and the Clubman Award.

Presteigne finished sixth in Marches League Division Two and chalked up five wins out of 11, with seven games falling foul of the weather.

John Goodwin claimed the only five-wicket haul and James Bray hit two centuries.

Bray and Will Kleiser also had the highest batting partnership with 151 in a win against Kington 2nd, while wicketkeeper Mike Davies took 15 catches and one stumping, to finish second overall in the league for most dismissals.

"We were delighted to have a true Welsh cricketing legend in Mark Wallace attend our dinner," said captain Davies.

"Thanks go to Will Kleiser, James Chilman and Bill Higginson for their hard work in organising the dinner and to Presteigne for turning out come rain or shine for another successful season.

"It's important to keep the club going and we are sincerely hoping to recruit more players for next season."
