Kenilworth 27 Hereford 34

HEREFORD coach Bob Stewart was left to breathe a sigh of relief after his side gained their fifth Midlands One West away win in a pulsating game which saw the lead change hands on five occasions.

"I told the players 'please don’t do that to me again, my nerves are shattered'," he said, after Leon Parsons' late try sealed a thrilling win.

After 10 minutes, Mark Philo drew the defence to feed Perry Pudge, who opened the scoring with a try, which Morgan Goodall converted with an excellent kick from near the touch line.

It was the start of an excellent day for Goodall, who landed six out of seven attempts, most from long range or a difficult angle.

The home team reduced the deficit with a penalty and then took the lead with a converted try when a slick handling movement enabled their left wing to outflank the Hereford defenders.

As the interval approached, Ali McColl and Ben Osborne set up a try for Tom Ewins, which Goodall converted to give Hereford a 14-10 half-time lead.

Straight from the kick off, Hereford extended their lead with another converted try when the forwards drove New Zealand prop Jock Welch over the line for his first try for Hereford, Goodall made the conversion.

But Kenilworth went on to take full advantage as first Tom Slater and then Richard Preece were yellow-carded in a 20-minute period which saw the home side register three tries one of which was converted.

Goodall landed a penalty in response but with 15 minutes to go Kenilworth held a three-point advantage.

Goodall was just wide with a long range penalty before landing another to equalise but Kenilworth's kicker was just wide with a penalty before a fine individual effort from winger Parsons sealed the win. He made an elusive 40-yard run, beating several defenders to touch down in the corner.

Goodall completed the scoring with another excellent kick from the touchline.

"The game could have gone either way and the Wyeside players, despite going behind twice, refused to give up," said spokesman Robin Davies.

"Three players made first team debuts and all made important contributions to this win, scrum-half Richard Chandler played the full 80 minutes and showed great promise, while John Swanson and Callum Duncan came off the bench and played a full part in the final period when the win was closed off.
