CRICKETERS pasts and present reminisced about the history of Marden Cricket Club during a 30th anniversary dinner at Hedley Lodge.

Marden finished third in GB Liners Marches League Division Two last season, but have had to worry more about their off-field activities.

The side played at the grounds of the Volunteer pub in the village for 29 years until they were told to vacate the premises by the landlord.

They finished the season at Pentland Gardens in Hereford, but still face an uncertain future.

However, judging by the passion shown by the players at Marden, there appears to be still an appetite for the club to continue.

Around 40 people are signed up at the club and awards were handed out at the anniversary dinner to last season's star players.

Brian Weaver picked up bowler of the year after gaining two five-wicket hauls, while captain and vice-chairman Sam Pratley scooped the batsman of the year prize.

Pete Atkin was named senior of the year for his bowling exploits towards the end of the season, while Laurie Steele was clubman of the year.

Steele does a number of jobs at the club, including watering the pitch and cutting hedges and received a standing ovation for his sterling work.

An auction was also held on the night, which helped raise £238 for the club.

Prizes included four tickets for a Worcestershire Cricket Club match next season, golf for four at Brockington Golf Club and meals at Gilbies and the Crown Inn at Woolhope.
