Westfields 4 Causeway United 1

TWO home games, two wins and eight goals have made it a happy opening to Westfield's programme at allpay.park after the first-day Midlands League Premier Division hiccup at Long Eaton.

"We said before the start of the season that the key was to make sure that allpay.park was a solid fortress, as it had been the season before last, and in four home games now, including two friendlies, we've scored 18 goals," said manager Sean Edwards, who acknowledged that the club were benefiting from increased attendances with the fans' boycott of Hereford United in place.

"It makes a massive difference to the players," said Edwards. "In the past, we always tried to get home games when Hereford were away but it was very encouraging to get 158 through the gate on Saturday when not only Hereford but Pegasus Juniors and Wellington were at home as well."

Edwards also said that he was encouraged by his side's strong second-half displays, which have brought all eight goals in the home games.

"We have a very fit bunch of boys this season and we've signed on some very good players," he said.

There were chances at both ends in a goalless first half against Causeway with Craig Jones and Jamie Cuss going close for Westfields while Aaron Lloyd missed a couple of excellent opportunities for the visitors.

Six minutes into the second period, Jones put Westfields ahead with a well-struck free-kick.

Cuss and Tom Brock went close to adding to the lead before Dan Polan volleyed low into the bottom corner to increase the advantage.

With a quarter-of-an-hour remaining, Lloyd did well inside the Fields area to set up Blake Walker to squeeze a shot under the body of keeper Matt Gwynne.

A superb save from Gwynne prevented an equaliser before Westfields pressed on in the last three minutes.

A defensive mix-up allowed substitute Luke Griffiths to add the third with Matt Reeve's low effort in the final minute rounding off the scoring.
