LEEK Town have cancelled Sunday’s friendly against Hereford United – less than 24 hours after publicising the fixture.

A host of Hereford United supporters took to Twitter last night urging Leek to cancel the fixture over the crisis at Edgar Street.

Leek join, among others, Gloucester City and Plymouth Argyle, Ledbury Town, Pegasus Juniors and Worcester Raiders in turning down matches against United's triallists.

However, Hereford travelled to Bolton and secured a 16-0 win over minnows Eagley FC last Saturday in a match switched at the 11th hour to a 'private facility'.

Hereford United's former players, management and staff are owed outstanding wages from last season, despite Tommy Agombar taking over the club at the end of May.

And Hereford United Supporters Trust, London Bulls and Scottish Bulls have voted in favour of a boycott at home matches at Edgar Street.

A statement posted on Leek Town Football Club’s website this morning says: “We were approached to play the fixture and agreed, being unaware of the issues currently surrounding the club and its supporters.

“Having now had the opportunity to review the situation, it was decided that it would be in the best interests of all concerned that the match does not go ahead.

“We hope that sometime in the future we will be able to welcome Hereford United to Harrison Park for a pre-season friendly when the club are truly ‘United’ again and wish the club and their supporters well in resolving the current issues of this historic club.”
