Golden goal spells end to Hereford's cup run

A GOLDEN goal in extra time sent Hereford crashing out of the England Hockey Knockout Competition Men’s Trophy at the quarter-final stage.

Hereford were on the verge of a cup shock against higher-graded Burton when they opened up a 4-2 lead.

But the visitors pulled a goal back and then levelled with a penalty flick in the last minute before shattering Hereford’s dreams in extra time.

Joe Thomas (2), Matt Thomas and Colin Amos scored Hereford’s goals but there were fine displays from Jim Wallis, Mark Allen, Kyle Drew and Giles Stokes.

The previous day, Hereford fought back from 3-2 down to record a 5-3 home win over Bristol & West in Premier Division 3 of the Davis Wood Hockey League.

Charlie Jones (2), Andy Rogers, Ewan Bell and Joe Thomas were on target in Hereford’s triumph.

A five-goal salvo from Daiyle Door fired Hereford 2nd to a 9-0 win at Wotton-under- Edge 2nd in Hereford &Glos Division 1.

Danny Makaruk, Steve Alderton, Joe Smith and Matt Thomas also scored in Hereford’s romp.

Table-topping Hereford Ladies celebrated a hat-trick of hat-tricks in their 11-1 drubbing of Team Bath Buccs 4th in the North Division of the West Clubs’ Women’s League.

Emily Tompkins and Jess Lambert hit four goals each and Erica Rogers netted three times for high-flying Hereford, who are eight points clear at the top.

Kington have moved to the top of the South Wales League Division 2 after a hard-fought 2- 1 success at Cardiff Athletic 2nd.

Jenny Layton bagged a double for Kington, who were inspired by Lucy Morgan’s playerof- the-match display.

Beth Watson and Suzy Chance set up Layton’s goals.

Jess Goodwin scored a brace for Presteigne in their 4-2 defeat to higher-graded Ruthin in the semi-finals of the Welsh Shield.

Midfielder Lesley Phillips was outstanding for Presteigne, who put up a brave fight before bowing out.
